DRAMA has hit on the first day of action at the velodrome after the Great British pair of Jessica Varnish and Victoria Pendleton were disqualified in the women's team sprint.

The controversy hit in the first round of competition when second rider Pendleton crossed the line before her lead-out partner had finished her lap.

The margin for error was a mere fraction of a second, but left the hometown favourites in tears.

The subsequent disqualification pushed Germany into a gold medal show-down with world record holder China, while Ukraine, outside the medal spots before the controversy, will face Australia in the bronze medal race.
