'Mini-tornado' hits Townsville

A THUNDERSTORM, described by some as a "mini-tornado", has ripped through Townsville, causing extensive damage.

Winds reached speeds up to 110 km/h.

Emergency services are reporting homes in Vincent were among the worst hit, with many losing roofs.

A Department of Community Safety spokeswoman said the State Emergency Service had received 38 calls for help in the area.

"Our officers are describing it as a mini-tornado. We have reports of roofs off, power lines down," a police spokesman said.
