IF you are a fan of athletics, write down the name Trae Williams.

The promising young sprint star is on his way to becoming one of Australia's fastest men.

At the recent Australian All Schools Championships, the 15-year-old scorched the track to claim silver in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m finals and a bronze in the Swedish relay.

The sporting event, held in Tasmania, featured more than 1000 of the country's top, young athletes.

Trae, a student at St John's Anglican College in Forest Lake, said it was his first time racing in a national competition.

"It was a great experience to run against some of Australia's fastest sprinters," he said.

"Unfortunately due to weather conditions we were running into a bit of a headwind during the event.

"So I wasn't able to break any personal best times."

But his impressive performance still managed to earn the Browns Plains teen a spot in the Australian team for the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

The multi-sport event for teenage Olympic aspirants will be held in Sydney from January 16 to 20, and feature athletes from more than 24 nations.

Trae was selected to compete in the 200m, 4x100m relay and Swedish relay.

With dreams to one day represent Australia at the Olympic games, the young sprinter said he was looking forward to the event.

"I'm excited to go up against athletes from other countries at Sydney's Olympic Park," he said.

In preparation for the event, Trae said he trained six days a week at the QEII Stadium.

"My dad coaches me with my 19-year-old sister, who competed last year in the World Junior Championships in Barcelona," he said.

St John's head of sport Richard Haines said the school was extremely proud to have Trae reach the pinnacle of his sport at school level.

"He is a great role model in this work ethic and discipline and shows other students it's possible to make it," he said.

"Trae's races during our sports carnivals are one of the 'must watch' events of the day for staff and students.

"Many of our recently graduated Year 12's have even told me they've regretted not getting his autograph before they left - as he could become famous one day.
