HIS first major parkland project was Berrinba Wetlands, but now Councillor Graham Able has set his sights firmly on Tygum Lagoon at Waterford.
With a view to upgrading the park, Cr Able said there would be a significant amount of money spent on the project.
“We're acquiring a block of land on Kingston Road and hopefully another in the future so the lagoon and park will be visible from the main road,” he said.
In the plans for the upgrade, council will extend the bike paths right around the lagoon and will build a club house for the boat modelling club that uses the lagoon on the weekends.
Cr Able said one of the major problems at the park occurred when it rained, and the lagoon could not drain the water which spilled over into the park.
As part of the upgrade, the council will install a system so the water drains faster to avoid flooding.
Cr Able said the project would start in the next few weeks and would take a good nine to 12 months to finish.
Local residents Daniel McGragh and Terri Taylor said they used to come to the lagoon every weekend, and now took their two-month-old son down regularly.
“We fish and take our baby out on the boat,” Mr McGragh said.
The couple said they were pleased the lagoon would be upgraded.
