Playground put to sleep for upgrade

A LOGAN playground was put 'to sleep' last Thursday while the facilities undergo a refurbishment.

Logan Gardens All Abilities playground in Logan Central was built about 20 years ago, and will undergo a $600,000 upgrade to revolutionise the existing playground.

The upgrade will provide improved opportunities for inclusive and interactive play between children from all areas of the community, regardless of their ability, and will include new features like wheelchair access, a double-person slide, a sensory play space and rubberised softfall.

Logan City Council provided $400,000 of the funding for the upgrade, while the State Government contributed $200,000.

State Member for Woodridge, Desley Scott, said the upgrade of the playground would enable children with a disability to play with their siblings and other children.

“It's going to be great,” she said.

“Just imagine the joy (it will provide) for the children.”

A council spokeswoman said everything that had been chosen had a dual purpose.

“We tried to include equipment in the playground to encourage wider groups (of people) to play together,” she said.

Logan Mayor, Pam Parker, said council were excited about the project, and announced they had already applied to the Federal Government for an additional $600,000 to continue upgrading the playground.

The upgrade of the playground will take place after the June/July school holidays and will be completed by the end of 2009.
