Slacks Creek set to unleash new recruits

INFILTRATED by nine fresh faces, and with all of last year’s squad returning to Usher Park, Slacks Creek senior men’s coach, Noel Flynn faces a huge dilemma ahead of their Brisbane Premier Division 1 season opener against Western Spirit this Sunday - how does he fit them all into the one team?

Slacks Creek's new recruits (L to R) Rhys Jackson, Allan Gordon, Braden Burgess, Michael Giallourakis, Shane Barnes, Jai Ingham, Jesse McDonnell and Tye McDonald with coach Noel Flynn.

The quick answer is he can’t, but Flynn was certainly not complaining.

“We’re always looking to build, we want to ultimately get into Premier League and we need to bring new blood in, which we’ve got,” he said.

“No one has got a mortgage (on their position) at this club.

“The team is selected on a week-to-week basis – the best 11 in my opinion get picked.

“Obviously they all can’t play in the same team, which means we’re going to have a good reserves team as well.”

One of the biggest coups for the club according to Flynn was the recruitment of former Logan United midfielder, Rhys Jackson.

The pint-sized teenager was regarded as one of the best young players in last year’s Queensland State League.

All up the Tigers snapped up four players from the defunct Logan United (Jackson, Jai Ingham, Tye McDonald and Jesse McDonnell).

The other new faces are Michael Giallourakis, Adam Coppolino, Shane Barnes, Alan Gordon and Braden Burgess.

Only time will tell if the club’s new players can help deliver the Division 1 title to Slacks Creek, but Flynn has good reason to believe his team will improve on last year, when they finished mid-table in their promotion year.

“With our new additions we’ll be better (than last year),” he said.

“People are saying we’ll make top four or maybe even better – we’ll see, but realistically what we are aiming for is top-four.”
