Intersection upgraded

AFTER countless accidents and an enduring problem with hoons, residents living near the intersection of Augusta and Gimlet Streets, Crestmead, can begin to rest easy after a recent announcement the intersection is set to be upgraded into a roundabout.

The project, which is expected to begin in the next three to four months, will also see a re-shaping of the curves along the street to force vehicles to slow down as they approach the intersection.

“I’m hopeful it will be signed off next month with the residents,” Division 9 Councillor, Phil Pidgeon, said.

“It’s gone through a lengthy process of design.”

Cr Pidgeon said the intersection was a common area for accidents, with cars having previously crashed through residential fences and into power poles.

“Some people just don’t know where the brakes are,” he said.

“They come along (the road) too fast, clip the island and lose control.

“We’ve always wanted to do something, about 12 months ago residents became very concerned.”

Cr Pidgeon said the council would also look at improving the next stretch on Augusta Street outside Crestmead Primary School.

“We’ll observe what happens and will survey the area,” he said.

“If it (speeding) continues, we will have to look at it.”
