SPORTS IN BRIEF

 Futsal success for two schools

TWO local school futsal teams have triumphed at the 2010 Southern Queensland Champion of Champions at Cornubia Insports.

Shailer Park State High's 14 Girls defeated Mt Alvernia College 3-0, while Marsden State High's 16 Girls held off Albany Creek State High to record a 3-2 victory.

Both sides have been invited to contest this year's Australasian Champion of Champions on the Gold Coast in October and November.

Calvary Christian College's 14 Boys and Shailer Park's 16 Boys teams are also allowed to compete at the Champion of Champions, despite losing their grand finals.

Europe tour for Sexton

JUST when he probably thought he couldn't achieve any more in 2010, exciting Springwood Puma, Alex Sexton has been included in the AIS/AFL Academy Squad.

The 16-year-old is set for an experience of a lifetime when he joins 29 potential stars from across the country for a tour of Europe in April next year.

They will visit the AIS elite training centre in Italy, play a match in London and attend the ANZAC Day Service in Turkey.

The European tour will replace the equivalent trip to South Africa of recent years, and will come on top of a full 12-month scholarship designed to bolster the development of the 30 players chosen following the recent NAB AFL Under-16 and Under-18 Championships.

For Sexton it is an extension of an amazing couple of months. The Mt Cotton teen won the McLean Trophy as best player in division two at the recent under-16 carnival in Sydney.

Moeller makes team

GERMAN-born volleyball player, Carsten Moeller (pictured) has been selected for Australia to travel to Thailand to compete at the 15th Asian Junior Men's Volleyball Championships in October.

The 19-year-old of Springwood has the chance to also participate in next year's World Junior Championships, if Australia finishes as one of the top three teams at the tournament.

No Australian junior team has ever achieved that feat to date.

The Australian team will depart our shores on September 22, where they will compete in the South East Asian Games for a week, ahead of the official tournament.

Alexander does well

FORMER John Paul College student, Shane Alexander has helped Australia finish an admirable fifth at the second Asian Cup in Iran.

The Australian men's team came from behind to beat Korea three sets to one in their final fixture of the tournament to finish fifth out of eight.

The tournament is part of the side's preparation for the 2010 World Championships, held in Rome from September 25.

Following the Asian Cup, Australia flew to the Czech Republic to play the Czech National Team, which has also qualified for the World Championships in Italy.

Alexander suited up to lead Australia to a rousing three sets to nil win.

Australia travels to Poland to play matches against members of the Polish World Championships squad this week.

Goodier and Smith included on tour

SOUTHERN Stars Baseball Club's Queensland Representatives, Adam Goodier and Steve Smith, will tour China this month to play in an international tournament based at the 2008 Olympic Softball Stadium in Beijing.

The pair will compete against teams from China, Taiwan and South Korea and during their down time do a bit of sight seeing.

The baseball club, which is situated at Regency Park, Regency Drive, Regents Park, will be holding their sign-on days for the 2010/2011 season on Saturday, August 21, 28 and September 4 between 9am and 3pm.

The club will also be conducting come and try out days on Wednesday, August 25, and September 1, between 5pm and 6.30pm. All ages from five years and up are welcome to attend.
