LOGAN City have capped an unprecedented era of AFLQ Women's League dominance by beating Western Magpies 7.5 (47) to 4.6 (30) in the grand final at Coorparoo on Saturday.
The 17-point victory makes it a remarkable five straight premierships for the Cobras.
In a replay of last year's grand final, the Magpies took the early ascendancy with two early goals to have the Cobras on the back foot.
But it wouldn't take long before the favourites would claw their way to the front, and once they did, they refused to relinquish the lead.
For co-coaches, Dan Finlay and Rodney Shaw, this was their first year in charge of the side and Finlay said he was proud of the way his players were able to lift at crucial times of the match.
“They really stepped up today and they were tested a lot by Sherwood (Western Magpies), but they stuck to the strategies and came through in the end,” he said.
The Magpies were a more formidable outfit than what they were 12 months ago, but the Cobras were still the more committed and skilled team on Saturday, led well by Jenille Pasfield, who was named player of the match.
The gamble of playing young forward, Katie Brennan after a three month injury lay-off paid dividends with the Queensland Under-18 captain's three goals spurring the Cobras to victory.
Brennan's goals straight after half-time and three-quarter-time proved vital as it meant the Cobras would always remain in control of the match.
Brennan, the hero of last year's grand final victory with five majors, was one of a number of players coach Finlay identified as instrumental to his team's triumph.
“We spoke about playing Katie and said the tactic was never to put her in to win the game for us, it was always to put her in and she'd take the key defender and free up the rest of our key forwards to score,” Finlay said.
“She was able to do that today and bagged a couple herself so full credit to her and the rest of the team.”
For Cobras ace, Jade Pregelj, Saturday's victory completed a rare flag/medal double after she scored the league's best and fairest award last week.
The win was also the best birthday present she could have wished for as she celebrated her 19th birthday the following day.
The classy midfielder has been a part of all five of the Cobras' premierships and is yet to lose a grand final.
But Pregelj was more glad the side was able to send retiring player, Marlo Brack, out on a good note.
“Marlo Brack has been with us at this club for years and years,” she said.
“She coached us to our first three premierships and played last year and this year and is retiring today so we wanted to play well for her and make sure we got the win for Marlo.”
