WHEN Logan District Opens coach, Travis Goulter wanted his players to get off to a perfect start, he didn't expect they would achieve it on the first play of the match.
On the opening kick-off of the Metropolitan Cup grand final, fullback turned back rower, Luke Hasemann, grabbed the ball and streaked down the field to score a spectacular 95m try.
From there you just knew nothing could get in Logan District's way.
Eventually the primary school representative side were crowned the DB Duncan Cup following a 34-6 annihilation of North West District in the Metropolitan Cup grand final at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday, August 18.
Following Hasemann's near length of the field four-pointer, Logan District went on to score another three tries in a faultless first-half display to take a commanding 22-0 lead into the break.
Despite the second half not quite going Logan District's way, they were still able to round out the victory with some brilliant tries.
In his second year as coach, Travis Goulter, was proud of his young players' performance, especially the foundation set by his forwards.
“It was great, a real team effort,” Goulter, a teacher at Harris Fields State School, said.
“There were no superstars out there, everyone really worked hard and everyone knew their job and were willing to do it.
“Our forwards set the platform for most of the game and our backs scored some fanatic tries off the back of their work.”
The Logan District side contained students from the following primary schools: Harris Fields SS, Springwood Road SS, Marsden SS, Logan Reserve SS, Woodridge SS, Mabel Park SS, Berrinba East SS and Crestmead SS.
Some of the players have already been declared future stars including Ataia Fapo, Corey Allan and Sato Keita Opo, who were named in the Queensland Under-12 Primary Schools team earlier this year.
“I think there are a number of boys who have the potential to go on to big things in their football careers,” Goulter said.
“I've always said Logan is known to be one of the best nurseries for NRL players and I see two or three players from this team who will definitely go on to play at least under-20s and a number of guys that will go on and play Q Cup.”
