CONSTRUCTION of the 500 metre section of Third Avenue, Berrinba, between Gilmore Road and the roundabout on Bardon Road, west of Third Avenue, is expected to start before the end of the month.
Councillor, Ray Hackwood (Division 12), said the new road would be constructed to replace Lakemba Street and meet future road network requirements.
“Unlike Lakemba, which was only ever constructed as a residential access route, the new section of Third Avenue will be constructed above the flood plain,” he said.
Cr Hackwood said construction would be staged with the first stage to include one lane in each direction.
“Ultimately the road will be upgraded to include two lanes in each direction,” he said.
The project, estimated at $2.1 million, is scheduled to start in late August, early September, weather permitting, and expected to be complete before the end of the year.
Cr Hackwood said Lakemba Road would be closed-off, covered over and would become part of the natural land form.
Cr Graham Able (Division 5), said he had been campaigning for a long time to get the traffic off Bardon Road.
“I am happy to see this stage of work approved with construction expected any day now,” he said.
