A LOGAN neighbourhood is demanding something be done after yet another car ploughed through the front of a house recently.
The residents of First Avenue, Marsden, presented a petition with 64 signatures to Logan City Council last week, requesting traffic calming devices be installed along their street to discourage hoons from using it as a race track.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said there had been a number of hit and run accidents along the street, the most recent last weekend when the street was awakened by an out of control car smashing through the front of a house.
The driver is yet to be found.
“They do burn outs in front of the houses,” the resident said.
“On Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights it's exacerbated but it happens all week.
“We're worried about the safety of our children.”
The resident said children didn't play along the street, just in case, and more than one neighbour had moved out of the street because of concerns for their family.
The residents presented the petition to Councillor Graham Able, who said Logan City Council's traffic branch would investigate to see if traffic calming devices were appropriate.
“I've asked the engineers to look at the whole of First Avenue to put in traffic calming devices,” he said.
“It's going to cost a lot of money, we're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars which are very hard to come across.
Cr Able said there was no time frame in place for when traffic calming devices might be put in place, and he was unsure if they would stop the hoons along First Avenue.
“Every suburb has hoons, and Marsden is no different,” he said.
“It doesn't matter how much money we've spent, people will still drive unsafely.”
Officer-In-Charge Logan District Traffic Branch, Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Tabrett, said there had been a number of accidents along First Avenue, and he urged residents to contact police with as many details as they could about hooning vehicles.
“It's idiot behaviour and they will be easily found,” he said.
“(But) it's never the same car and person.”
