WHO needs a fast car when you've got a suped-up lawn mower to zoom down the streets with?
In a sight to behold a pack of lawn mowers roared towards Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club at Kingston to complete the inaugural Hog's Breath Cafe Brisbane Mower Sport Charity Ride.
Not only did they manage to raise a few eyebrows during the eight-hour, 73km journey from Aspley to Kingston, but the 18 riders managed to add $7000 to the Mater Children Hospital's bank balance.
While the ride had to be postponed, organiser Rob Kirkwood said the spirit of the event didn't wane.
"It was an absolute adrenalin rush," the Boronia Heights father-of-two said.
"Riding lawn mowers on streets was fantastic.
"To also know you're raising money for such a good cause and doing something we're all passionate about makes it even better."
The unique fundraising event was the brainchild of Mr Kirkwood, but was quickly supported by Brisbane Mower Sport and the Jimboomba Police.
The money raised from it will be used to help care for sick children and their mothers at the Mater Children's Hospital.
Mr Kirkwood thanked all the local businesses who chipped in to support the cause.
He plans on turning the ride into a biannual event.
Not content with their achievement, Mr Kirkwood and Brisbane Mower Sport are putting on another fundraiser for the Mater Children's Hospital at the Beenleigh Showgrounds on Sunday, November 20.
The club will be hosting a race day for people to check out the thrills and spills of mower racing. Practice starts at 9am before racing gets underway at 10.15am. For more information contact Rob on 0410 657 279.
