Brenda puts her best pedal forward

INSPIRED: Brenda Batten is hoping to raise more than $5000 for cancer research when she takes place in the Rio Tinto ride to Conquer Cancer charity event this August.

LATER this year a Bethania grandmother will pedal through Brisbane with one thing on her mind - her father.

Having seen the impacts cancer has had on her own friends, Brenda Batten signed up to participate in the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer charity event in the hope of making a difference.

While Ms Batten has taken every moment train and fundraised since October, the loss of her father on January 17 has only enhanced her motivation.

"It has made me more determined to train harder and to raise the money to find a cure for this dreaded disease," she said.

Ms Batten will ride 200km through Brisbane's scenic suburbs across two days to raise funds for cancer research.

Once Ms Batten found out she had to raise a minimum $2500 to participate in the second annual event, she set about raising the money by organising raffles.

The age care and disability services worker is so far on target having raised $857, but she has her sights set on a pulling in a much bigger money load.

"I won't stop when I hit $2500, I'll keep going and raise as much as possible," she said.

"If I can get $5000, or even $6000 or $7000 I'd be rapt."

Ms Batten has been preparing for the gruelling trek by tackling some of Logan's steepest hills and riding 20km through Daisy Hill forest on a mountain bike each weekend as part of her work.

"My friend died of cancer, my dad was a cancer survivor and my girlfriend's mother is fighting it, so I have plenty of reasons to do well," she said.

Funds raised from the ride will benefit Queensland Institute of Medical Research.
