Road works pose risk

CIVIL road works on a busy main road are causing driving headaches and has workers in a nearby industrial estate believing it was only a matter of time before there was a serious accident.

Works on Wembley Rd at Berrinba to improve a 200m stretch of the road started last year, but the most significant work being done on the intersection of Pagewood St and Wembley Rd kicked off last week.

As a result of the changed traffic conditions, drivers have limited access to Pagewood St.

Tile World general manager Mike Hawkins said he had witnessed more close calls than he can count since the traffic conditions had changed.

"There are already a lot of crashes on this road, but it's only going to get worse while road works are going on," he said.

While some motorists turning into Pagewood St were disobeying the lone "no right turn" sign to save time on their travel, Mr Hawkins believed the scarce number of warning signs and lack of road visibility was confusing people unfamiliar to the area.

"When you're trying to drive into the street (Pagewood St) you think your eyes are playing tricks on you," he said.

Last Thursday at 3pm, The Reporter witnessed three motorists in the period of two minutes make an illegal right turn into Pagewood St, while another driver conducted an illegal u-turn 50m up the road.

The developer who ordered the road works was unavailable for comment.
