WHAT: Weaving and coiling workshop

VISUAL artist Mary Elizabeth Barron will be weaving the community together with her new craft project.

Throughout 2012 she will be hosting a series of weaving and coiling workshops to teach the traditional basketry techniques of this ancient craft at different community organisations.

At the end of the year all the pieces of fabric will be joined together to make one large community artwork quilt for the city to enjoy.

Mrs Barron, who has always had a love of craft, said the project was a great way of telling a story about the city of Logan.

"We will be weaving with old clothes, so we will be representing the individuals that are members of the Logan community," she said.

"We say a lot about ourselves in the clothes we wear so it's expressing our personality because we all have a lot of memories in our clothes, so it becomes more than just basketry then and more about representing all the different cultures in our community."

Participants are asked to bring their own clothes materials to weave and coil.

Mrs Barron's classes will be held each Wednesday from February 15 until March 21 from 10am to 12pm at the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group.
