Women tackle new challenge

MOVE over fellows, it's the girls' time to shine.

Waterford Demons Rugby League Club is on the verge of fielding a team in the Brisbane and District Women's Rugby League competition this year.

Despite having never played the game, Brooke Pearse has thrown up her hand to play in the club's inaugural women's team.

The Loganlea mother-of-three said she was eager to get involved so she could share her sons' passion for rugby league.

"I have one child starting under-6s this year and another in under-9s, but I thought 'why should they have all the fun?'," Pearse, who has defected from softball after 25 years on the diamond fields, said.

"My eight-year-old is especially excited that his mum is playing.

"I think he's more pumped than I am."

The Demons have already recruited several new and experienced players, but Pearse, a 30-year-old warehouse manager, said they would need more women to come on board if they were to take to the field.

She believed it was a great opportunity to meet new friends and also show women were just as good as the men.

"I can't wait," she said.

"It's not just a male's sport, it can be for females too.

"Just give it a go."
