RESIDENTS who live on Holzheimers Rd, Bethania are angered by the number of times they have been trapped in due to the train crossing closing down, shutting their only way in or out.

In the past two weeks alone, the train crossing has been closed down six times.

Logan City Councillor Luke Smith told last week's ordinary Logan City Council meeting that this was one of the biggest issues affecting residents in his division.

"This is without a doubt the biggest issue in my division because it actually impacts on the health of our people," Cr Smith said.

"There are two retirement villages in that area, one hospice, a community centre and a Council pool.

"With the retirement village and the hospice, that amounts to about 2500 people.

"If the train line is blocked and there is an emergency, you cannot get emergency vehicles in.

"Because the station is so close to the crossing, the train actually goes across the crossing line."

Cr Smith is currently working with State Member for Waterford Michael Latter to seek an alternative entry to ensure emergency vehicles could still access the retirement village or hospice if needed.

"We have sent a letter to the Transport Minister asking if we could find an alternative access report for them to investigate," he said.

"There is one available, which is an easy fix which would only be opened in times of an emergency."

State Member for Waterford Michael Latter said he was hoping to get the minister down to the train platform for a visit.

"This issue was brought to my attention by Councillor Luke Smith, and since my talk with him, I have been in discussions with both the Minister for Transport and assistant minister," Mr Latter said.

"I am currently working on them coming down for a visit to see how this impacts on the residents of Bethania."
