Keith's not just a country boy

IN CASE you haven't been able to tell by now, Keith Urban listens to a lot more than just country music.

The Voice Australia coach has been singing along to nearly every song sung in the show's blind auditions.

It was his broad curiosity in music that put Urban on to fellow Queenslander Megan Washington long before she released her two-time ARIA winning album I Believe You Liar.

"I was one or two EPs into my recording career. I hadn't released my record. Nothing had happened. I was just gigging for 50 people," Washington said.

"He called me up and said 'Hi, I'm Keith Urban. I've heard your music and I really like it.

"I'd like to invite you to sing with me at my show' and I said 'OK, where is it?' and he said 'The Rod Laver Arena'.

"Keith is a huge reason why I'm on this show.

"Something not a lot of people know about Keith is, yes, he's a country artist and an astonishingly successful one, but that's not where he begins and ends as an artist.

"He's one of the only people I've met who has maintained a real curiosity about music."

Washington has been helping the Caboolture native mentor his team through the battle phase of the singing competition, which started this week.

"The level of talent on this show is alarming, and it begs the question: what have we been doing for the past 10 years?" she said.

"Where have these guys been? Most have been working, flogging it out, gigging, doing everything I did. They just haven't had a break yet."

It's fair to say their break, working with the likes of Urban and Washington, has truly arrived.

Washington, who was born in Papua New Guinea and grew up in Brisbane, said she would never have considered being involved with any other talent show.

"There is no greater endorsement I can give than to be involved," she said.

The battle rounds continue on Monday.
